HD-DVD Format (HD DVD) - This is a name for an advanced DVD-video format. Microsoft and Intel are/were supporting the HD-DVD format for high definition DVDs. This format, developed by Toshiba, is/was going head to head with Blu-Ray, which was developed by Sony Corp. Both formats, which depend on blue lasers, can store much more data than ordinary DVDs. This makes them perfect to store high definition movies and next generation videogames. Blu-Ray has overtaken HD-DVD in prominence.
