NIC - (Networked Information Center) – (1) The operational headquarters of a network.  The most famous of these on the Internet is InterNIC where new domain names are registered and transferred.(2) NIC also refers to Network Interface Cards that plug into a computer and adapt the network interface to the correct standard.  PCMCIA, PCI and ISA cards are all examples of NICs.
