Switched Broadcast - (a.k.a. Switched Digital Video) - Switched broadcasting transmits programs and software updates to subscribers only when a particular group of subscribers have activated their service and thus are connected to the network. The opposite would be broadcasting to all subscribers randomly. Switched Broadcast enables dramatic savings in bandwidth usage, does not alter the TV viewing experience and allows the reclaimed network capacity to be used to deliver new and expanded tiers of services and content.

Cable operators are competing with telcos by adopting the IPTV model using switched broadcast technology and next generation set-top boxes.
