- (Compact Disc) - This mass marketed 13 centimeter, laser-encoded optical memory storage medium was developed using standards owned and laid out by Philips and Sony. It contains up to 650 Mb of data.

Since the original music coding standards, other standards have been developed for data storage such as the CD-ROM, CD-I (a Philips interactive CD standard) DVD etc. Also see Video CD.
