Data Encoding - The method by which certain communication devices (such as modems) encode digital data onto an analog signal for transmission.  A converter mechanism is necessary for computer data to be transported over a variety of networks. The most popular of these "converter mechanisms" is a modem. Fax machines use built-in modems.
